The Master’s Degree in Social Work (M.S.W.) at Angelo State University prepares students for advanced social work practice. Those who receive this advanced social work degree may work in the medical, mental health, and educational fields, providing support as therapists, healthcare social workers, school social workers, and clinical social workers.

An M.S.W. at Angelo State University is offered on-campus and online. Advance standing students can earn their degree in one year. Traditional track students will complete their M.S.W. in two years. 

Our master’s degree program is built on an advanced generalist practice perspective, and is consistent with expected social work job growth in the next few years.

All prospective M.S.W. students must follow the admission requirements below in addition to the admission requirements based on their track selected. *Acceptance is determined by the amount of available space.

* Angelo State University’s Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) Program is currently in the process of receiving Initial Candidacy status with the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

  • Highlights

    Advanced Generalist Practice

    • 33 Semester credit hour degree program for the Advanced-Standing Track
    • 63 Semester credit hour degree program for the Traditional Track
    • Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA
    • No GRE required.
    • To apply for the Online M.S.W., you must be a Texas resident currently living in Texas. Active service members and families will be able to remain in the program if they receive a Permanent Change of Station (P.C.S.).

    Step # 1 Complete the Graduate Application for Admission with application fee.

    Step #4  Complete the additional requirements below for admission based on the track you select and GPA of your last 60 hours.

  • Advanced Standing Admissions Requirements
    All Advanced Standing Admissions must complete the steps shown in the Admission Requirements before completing requirements below.

    G.P.A. of a 2.75 or Higher

    • B.S.W. degree from a CSWE Accredited Program with a G.P.A of a 2.75 or higher in the last 60 hours of undergraduate course credit.
    • No additional requirements needed.

    • Must have received a “B” or better in B.S.W. Field Placement.

    G.P.A. of a 2.50 to 2.74

  • Traditional Program Admissions Requirements
    All Traditional Program Admissions must complete the steps shown in the Admission Requirements before completing requirements below.


    G.P.A. of a 2.75 or Higher

    B.S.W. Degree Older Than Five Years

M.S.W. Field Education 

  • M.S.W. Field Education Requirements

    You will be responsible to research, locate and initiate this site/placement, but will be supported in this process by our M.S.W. Field Director.

    • All Advanced Standing students will be required to complete 500 hours of Field Education taking place over the spring and summer semesters during your one-year degree plan.

    • All Traditional Track students will be required to complete 900 hours of Field Education.  Traditional Track students will complete 400 hours during the summer and fall, after you have completed the first year curriculum of fall and spring semesters.  Traditional Track students will complete 500 hours of Field Education during your last year in the program, taking place over the spring and summer semesters.

    • All Advanced Standing and Traditional Track students must attend the Field Education Orientation on campus at ASU, even if you are in the on-line curriculum track.  Failure to attend the Field Education will result in you not being admitted into Field Education.

    • No students will be allowed to graduate from the program if the Field Education hours are not completed satisfactorily.

Degree Details

  • No GRE Required

  • Our M.S.W. program is offered On-Campus and Online  Online students must reside in Texas. 

  • Advance Standing M.S.W. students can earn their degree in as little as one year. 33 semester credit hours.

  • Traditional Track M.S.W. students will earn their degree in two years. 63 semester credit hours.

  • Students with a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited University or 
    B.S.W. Degree from a CSWE Accredited program older than five years can earn a M.S.W. degree in two years. See Traditional Program Admissions Requirements
