The Master’s Degree in Social Work (M.S.W.) at Angelo State University prepares students for advanced social work practice. Those who receive this advanced social work degree may work in the medical, mental health, and educational fields, providing support as therapists, healthcare social workers, school social workers, and clinical social workers.

Our master’s degree program is built on an advanced generalist practice perspective, and is consistent with expected social work job growth in the next few years.

 In 2019, CSWE granted Angelo State University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program Initial Candidacy status. Students enrolled in the MSW program are eligible to sit for the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners’ licensing exam upon graduation. Full accreditation of the MSW program is slated for June 2022.

All prospective M.S.W. students must follow the admission requirements below in addition to the admission requirements based on their track selected. *Acceptance is determined by the amount of available space.

  • Highlights

    Advanced Generalist Practice

    • 33 Semester credit hour degree program for the Advanced-Standing Track
    • 63 Semester credit hour degree program for the Traditional Track
    • Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA
    • No GRE

    • No campus visit, reference letters, or professional narrative required.

  • Deadlines

    The MSW program at Angelo State University admits student each fall. The MSW Program has priority application dates and will accept applications after this date. ASU will process your application as quickly as possible, however, applying early (by the priority date) gives you the best opportunity for admission. As a general rule is to have your application and supporting documents submitted at least two months before the desired semester start date.

    Graduate Admission 

    Application for graduate admission is a multi-step process.

    Step 1: Applicants will complete a Graduate Studies application via the ApplyTexas portal (no essay required). Applications will be taken up to 30 days before the start of the desired semester. International applicants should give themselves more lead time in the application process.

    Step 2: Once your Apply Texas application has been processed by the College of Graduate Studies and Research you will receive an email to access the online M.S.W. application via InPlace Student Platform. Please read carefully and complete all sections of the online social work application.

    Applications remaining incomplete after the final deadline date will be at risk of not being reviewed for admission.

M.S.W. Admissions

  • Admissions Requirements

    Regular Admission Status

    • GPA of 2.75 and higher of undergraduate college coursework from a regionally accredited institution.
    • Current graduate student applicants who seek to transfer and are in good standing with their current academic institution will be accepted unconditionally.
    • *No GRE, reference letters, or professional narrative required.

    Provisional Admission Status

    • GPA of 2.0 to 2.74 hours of college undergraduate coursework from a regionally accredited institution.
    • Current graduate student applicants who seek to transfer and are in good standing with their current academic institution will be accepted.
    • *Provisional status students must make a 3.00 (on a 4 point scale) G.P.A. during their first semester and maintain a 3.00 G.P.A. once admitted into the MSW program.
    • *No GRE, reference letters, or professional narrative required.
  • Advanced Standing and Traditional Track

    Advanced Standing Track Admissions

    • B.S.W. degree from a CSWE-accredited institution.
    • Complete the Graduate School and M.S.W. applications
    • ALL OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS sent to the Angelo State University Graduate School
    • No GRE required or additional requirements
    • Acceptance is contingent upon the program’s amount of available space

    Traditional Track Admissions

    • Non-B.S.W. degree from a regionally accredited institution.
    • Complete the Graduate School and M.S.W. applications
    • ALL OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS sent to the Angelo State University Graduate School
    • No GRE required or additional requirements
    • Acceptance is contingent upon the program’s amount of available space

M.S.W. Field Education 

  • M.S.W. Field Education Requirements

    You will be responsible to research, locate and initiate your site/placement, but will be supported in this process by our M.S.W. Field Director.

    • All Advanced Standing students will be required to complete 500 hours of Field Education taking place over the spring and summer semesters during your one-year degree plan.

    • All Traditional Track students will be required to complete 900 hours of Field Education.  Traditional Track students will complete 400 hours during the summer and fall, after you have completed the first year curriculum of fall and spring semesters.  Traditional Track students will complete 500 hours of Field Education during your last year in the program, taking place over the spring and summer semesters.

    • All Advanced Standing and Traditional Track students are required to attend the mandatory Field Education Orientation training, see field director for date and time.

    • No students will be allowed to graduate from the program if the Field Education hours are not completed satisfactorily.

Degree Details

  • No GRE or Essay Required

  • Our M.S.W. program is offered On-Campus and Online.

  • Advance Standing M.S.W. students can earn their degree in as little as one year. 

  • Traditional Track M.S.W. students will earn their degree in two years. 

  • Students with a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited University or 
    B.S.W. Degree from a CSWE Accredited program older than five years can earn a M.S.W. degree in two years. See Traditional Program Admissions Requirements
