When Trevor Schwartz chose Angelo State, he carried on the family legacy.

“I’m actually a third-generation Angelo State student,” he said. “My grandma came here when it was San Angelo College. My dad is an alum. Both my brothers also attended here. My whole family has gone to school here.”

But that wasn’t the only factor in his decision. A senior agribusiness major from Wall, Trevor was drawn to all the amenities the ASU Department of Agriculture has to offer.

“In the Ag Department, there’s a lot more hands-on learning then most universities because of the smaller class sizes,” he said. “You’re actually getting to interact and do things with the animals, do things on the ranch.”

ASU’s Ranch is a huge part of the hands-on learning curriculum in the Ag Department. Officially named the Management, Instruction and Research Center, the ASU Ranch is 6,000 acres located just north of San Angelo.

“The best thing about it, all your lectures are in the morning here on campus,” he said. “In the afternoons, everybody packs up and heads to lab out at the ranch.”

When he’s not studying or participating in one of the many Ag Department student organizations, Trevor runs his own business, Schwartz Boys Produce.

“We sell vegetables, produce, meats and fruit on a local roadside stand and at various farmer’s markets,” he said. “I’ve been doing that since I was little, and have aspirations to grow that once I graduate. The plan is to one day build a storefront.”

“I would have to say the best thing about Angelo State is that you’re not just a member of the crowd.”

“It’s not much free time,” Trevor continued. “The intense work starts from March until October. The other parts of the year are a lot more relaxed. But from March to October, I have to really make up ground on my classes in those times I’m not real busy, which I’m proud of.”

And when it comes down to it, he felt there was no better place to be than Angelo State.

“I would have to say the best thing about Angelo State is that you’re not just a member of the crowd,” he said. “You really get to know your professors, and I really enjoy the ag professors here.”

“I mean, you know each individual person on a personal level within your department,” Trevor continued. “Angelo State has a hometown vibe – the Ram Fam. Everybody at Angelo State is like a family.”
