English Language Proficiency
Because all classes at ASU are conducted in English, it is essential that every applicant who is not a native speaker have a sufficient knowledge of the English language. Applicants can demonstrate English proficiency by fulfilling one of the options listed below:
- Satisfactory completion of the English Language Learner’s Institute (ELLI) program at ASU
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores: a minimum of 550 (paper-based) or a minimum of 69 (internet-based)
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores: a minimum of 6.0 overall
- Duolingo score: 96 or higher
- Official transcript showing graduation from an accredited U.S. high school attended for a minimum of three years
- Official transcript from an overseas U.S. Department of Defense school showing graduation (must have attended for a minimum of three years)
- Official transcript from a U.S. associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral program (degree must be posted)
- An International Baccalaureate (IB): grade 5 or higher
- English 1301 (English Composition) and English 1302 (Writing across the Curriculum) transferred from a regionally accredited U.S. institution that count for transfer credit at ASU (not ESL/ELL courses) with grades of “B” or better
