Prospective students must be aware that agencies have the right to refuse to accept them for field placement. Acceptance into the social work program does not guarantee a student a field placement if the refusal is based on a student’s criminal history. Refusal of a field placement under such circumstances will not entitle the student to any refund of tuition or other fee incurred up to that point of the program.
Agencies may require a background check for social work interns or new hires at their discretion. You will bear any costs associated with such background checks that may be requested by agencies.
NOTE: Revealing any criminal history does not automatically disqualify you from being accepted as a B.S.W. student, but failing to reveal such experiences constitutes a violation of the NASW Code of Ethics and may be grounds for termination from the B.S.W. degree program. You have an obligation to report any changes in your criminal history to the Social Work Program Director within one week of the change.A criminal record may not disqualify you from being accepted into the B.S.W. major, but may disqualify you from certain internship opportunities, licensure, and/or some employment opportunities. It is your responsibility to determine if any criminal history will disqualify you from licensure or any employment opportunities.
No student will be allowed to graduate with a degree in social work without completing the field placement requirement. Demographic Information is needed for the Council on Social Work Education and for program planning. It is not mandatory that you complete this information; however, you doing so will be greatly appreciated.
