Junior Honors history major Jessica Tharp, from Veribest, was selected to participate in the International Honors Summer Institute on Holocaust Remembrance at Hanze University of Applied Science in Groningen, the Netherlands from June 18-July 5. This is a unique collaboration with Memorial Centre Camp Westerbork, a World War II Nazi refugee, detention, and transit camp, in which honors students from across the U.S. will join with an international cohort to study Holocaust history and apply those lessons to investigate and critique contemporary problems of social inequality, discrimination, and refugee displacement. The program includes visits to Holocaust sites in the Netherlands and Germany. Jessica received an Alvin New Family Honors Enhancement Grant to fund her travel experience.
Earlier this year, Jessica presented a paper completed for her Honors research credit entitled “The Persistence of Demon Rum” at the 2017 West Texas Historical Association Conference in Lubbock.
