Since 1963, the President of the United States has proclaimed National Small Business Week to highlight programs and services available to entrepreneurs through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
The San Angelo City Council recently presented a proclamation to the ASU Small Business Development Center proclaiming their support for National Small Business Week. They acknowledged their support of small businesses by encouraging an environment for them to grow their business, create jobs and ensure a vibrant community today and tomorrow. The ASU Small Business Development Center is a local entity that works with small businesses through no-cost business advising and low to no-cost business training. We work alongside other organizations in the City to provide a positive environment for small businesses to start and grow.
This year we were honored to nominate Mayor Brenda Gunter for a National Small Business Week award titled SBA Small Business Champion. We are happy to announce that she won the award for the 55 county San Antonio SBA District. Mayor Gunter has worked hard for many years creating a positive environment for small businesses in downtown and now for the city as a whole.
Many have said that small businesses are the backbone of the economy. This is true in San Angelo and in Texas. Here are a couple of interesting facts that highlight this for Texas compiled from the 2017 Texas Small Business Profile. In Texas, 99.8% of all businesses are small, and small business employees constitute 45.9% of the private workforce in Texas.
We like to celebrate the small business community every week, but especially during National Small Business Week. They are the backbone of the economy. We are happy they allow us to work with them on a daily basis and we can point to many success stories. We have found that successful small business owners are determined, resourceful, curious, and lifelong learners. They know their customers well, strive to serve them, and they take good care of their employees as well. Hats off to small business owners!
