Michael Conaway, Honorary Alumnus

Honorary Alumnus - U.S. Congressman
It’s good to have friends in high places – and ASU is lucky to call Republican U.S. Congressman Michael Conaway one of our best friends
  • Michael Conaway

Now in his eighth term, Conaway represents Texas’ 11th Congressional District that includes San Angelo. His support of ASU has often been high-profile, like announcing several of our most significant federal grants, including the Hispanic Serving Institution grants from the U.S. Department of Education. He also played a key role in facilitating ASU’s transition into the Texas Tech University System.

“Our state leaders made the right choice in aligning Angelo State with the Texas Tech University System,” Conaway said. “ASU has made the most of the partnership by expanding its reach to even more students, and the system has benefited by increasing its influence in the state. I credit the successful transition to the compatible values and cultures of the San Angelo and Lubbock communities.”

…I have always considered myself part of the Ram Family…

Just as important, however, is Conaway’s support at the “grassroots” level. He annually hosts multiple ASU interns in his Washington, D.C., office, and he is no stranger to the ASU campus. His many appearances include town hall meetings for the Student Government Association and College Republicans, multiple ribbon cuttings and grand openings, and addressing graduates at commencement ceremonies.

“I have always been a strong supporter of ASU,” Conaway said. “It is a hallmark of San Angelo and District 11, and provides an impressive range of academic programs that equip students with the education and skills they need to succeed in their future career endeavors. I have witnessed the evolution and growth of ASU over the years and will continue to champion them in any way that I can.”

In recognition of his continuous support and friendship, the ASU Alumni Association has named Conaway its 2019 Honorary Alumnus.

“I am incredibly humbled,” Conaway said. “As a long-time supporter of Angelo State, I have always considered myself part of the ‘Ram Family’ and am excited to now make it official. I am sincerely grateful to the Alumni Association for selecting me for this honor, and I look forward to continuing to support ASU
