Homecoming Honoree: Derek McIntyre

Distinguished Young Alumnus - Class of 2019 (MBA)

Now a third-generation Ram, Derek McIntyre had always been linked to ASU, but his hectic schedule almost kept him from fully joining the Ram Family.

The chief operating officer for TimeClock Plus (TCP) in San Angelo, McIntyre and his wife, ASU alumna Brett McIntyre, have two young sons, and he is also active in the community with the United Way, Children’s Advocacy Center and Area Foundation. Plus, when he started looking at getting his MBA, it had been 10 years since he was last in college.

“But in speaking with my wife, cousins and colleagues who had more recently attended ASU, I found comfort knowing the professors and staff were caring, patient, accommodating, and desired to help students succeed,” McIntyre said. “Combining that with a nationally recognized College of Business and flexible, online MBA, I was sold on attending ASU and am thankful I did.”

ASU is also thankful as McIntyre has quickly become a very influential alumnus by greatly expanding the partnership between ASU and TCP. His efforts have created business and computer science internships, several annual scholarships and prime job placements for ASU students and graduates, as well as sponsorship of ASU’s annual summer Code Camp for middle and high school students. He is also personally involved in several other initiatives involving business students.

“I attended camps and livestock judging competitions on campus as a child, and I want the children of the Concho Valley to have those same opportunities,” McIntyre said. “I also believe the work ethic and humility of small-town kids translates well to success in business, and ASU produces a lot of really smart, hard-working young adults from small towns who are eager to succeed. These activities are a win for me personally and a win for our business and the community.”

And speaking of winning, for his career success, community involvement and outstanding support of ASU, the Alumni Association has named McIntyre its 2021 Distinguished Young Alumnus.

“It’s a huge honor for me, but I’m prouder to have achieved this to honor my dad,” McIntyre said. “He’s been such a dedicated supporter of ASU, having served on the Alumni Board and cooked hotdogs at countless Ram Jams. My success is rooted in the support of my parents, so this recognition is as much theirs as mine.”
