Homecoming Honoree: Maso Hamilton
Distinguished Young Alumnus - Class of 2009
Whether on a basketball court or in a court of law, Maso Hamilton is driven to achieve excellence.
“Once I saw the Stephen’s Arena, visions of winning big games and competing for championships materialized before my eyes,” Hamilton said. “The people sold me, however. Once I assimilated into the student body, I began making lifelong friends. My introduction to Angelo State was my introduction to Texas, and I love Texas.”
A four-year letter winner, Hamilton as a senior helped lead the Rams to a 20-win season, a top-20 national ranking and their first appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament in eight years. He won the 2009 Holland’s Award, graduated that December with his bachelor’s degree in journalism, and then headed to law school at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
Since earning his law degree in 2015, Hamilton has advanced to his current position as an assistant state’s attorney in the Howard County State Attorney’s Office in Ellicott City, Md.
“My duties as an assistant’s state’s attorney,” Hamilton said, “are to seek and achieve justice on behalf of the citizens of Maryland in criminal court.”
“As a trial lawyer, time is always of the essence and there never seems to be enough,” he added. “My experience as a student-athlete at ASU aided me in learning how to efficiently maximize my time to present well-prepared cases and arguments. These are skills I may not have acquired at another university.”
For his early career success, efforts for justice for the people of Maryland, and exceptional representation of ASU, the Alumni Association has named Hamilton its 2020 Distinguished Young Alumnus.

“I am elated and humbled to be honored,” Hamilton said. “I dedicate the award to my late mother, Tamara Smiley Hamilton. She raised me to set a high standard for myself, morally and professionally. She is very proud of this tremendous honor, and I’m thankful to have been able to share it with her while she was here.”
