AirMed1 Helicopter Featured at ASU Summer Nursing Camp
June 13, 2024
The Shannon AirMed1 helicopter made a special appearance Thursday, June 13, on the Angelo State campus as part of the ASU Department of Nursing’s inaugural Summer Nursing Discovery Camp 9.0.
After landing on the Campus Green near the Plaza Verde residence hall at 9 a.m., the AirMed1 crew showed the campers how they give emergency treatment on scene and then load patients into the helicopter for transport to Shannon Medical Center.
The AirMed1 landing highlighted Day 5 of the six-day residential camp. Close to 30 local and area students who are entering the ninth grade this fall are participating in the camp, where they were invited to “discover nursing” as they:
- Learn from ASU nursing faculty and students.
- Interact with practicing RNs and other healthcare professionals.
- Explore nursing and patient-care skills.
- Interact with state-of-the-art human patient simulators.
- Participate in virtual anatomy lab dissections.
- Complete CPR and First Aid training.
Camp activities also include:
- Rock-wall climbing and swimming
- Game and movie nights
- Recreation and social time
- Prep for a successful 9th-grade year
Instructors and supervisors for the camp include ASU nursing faculty, staff and students. Campers have been housed in ASU’s award-winning Plaza Verde residence hall, and the majority of the camp skills sessions are taking place in the Health and Human Services Building.
Next year, camp organizers plan to add a second week for students entering the 10th and 11th grades in fall 2025.
