Biology Professor Featured in ‘Raptor Week’ Seminar

Birding enthusiasts from across the state tuned in for a presentation by Dr. Ben Skipper of the Angelo State biology faculty during the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s “Raptor Week” virtual birding seminar that was presented Aug. 12-16.
Skipper was the opening presenter for the seminar and spoke on “Raptor Identification” on Aug. 12.
Featured as an expert guest speaker,Commonly known as birds of prey, raptors are a diverse group of avian species that encompasses owls, hawks, falcons, kites, vultures and eagles. Other presentations included information on raptor physiology, behavior and habitat usage, as well as photography tips. Proceeds from the seminar will benefit Rio Diablo Birding Camp, an annual Texas AgriLife youth camp focused on birding, ecology and conservation.
An associate professor of biology, Skipper is also curator of the Collection of Birds in the Angelo State Natural History Collections. His research focuses on the population genetics of raptors and songbirds, bird-prey interactions, and the evolution of song dialects. With over 15 years of experience, Skipper specializes in the urban ecology of Mississippi kites and other urban raptors, making significant contributions to understanding their habitats and behaviors.
