KBH Center Hosts Area Community Cybersecurity Event

September 03, 2024

Angelo State University’s Kay Bailey Hutchison Center for Cyber Intelligence, Innovation, and Security Studies hosted a community cybersecurity event on Aug. 19 in nearby Eden.

Titled “Recognize. React. Defend.: Cybersecurity & Fraud Awareness,” the event was designed to address the unique cybersecurity needs of senior citizens. Participants were treated to a presentation on essential cyber hygiene practices, offering practical tips and a general overview of best practices for staying safe online.

The attendees also had the opportunity to directly engage with the ASU presenters, who answered their questions about protecting personal information and identifying potential threats, like phishing scams and AI-driven voice calls.

Following the ASU session, the owner of a local Eden bank provided a valuable presentation on bank fraud, highlighting how AI-initiated scams have become a leading tool for financial fraud and theft.

Partnering with the local community was a rewarding experience, as the ASU presenters were able to address their concerns, offer tailored advice and provide resources to help them become responsible digital citizens.
