Art Professor Conducts Junior College Ceramics Workshop

Hayun Surl of the Angelo State art faculty recently conducted a free ceramics workshop for students at Victoria College in Southeast Texas.

Angelo State art professor Hayun Surl Hayun Surl An assistant professor of ceramics at ASU, Surl demonstrated various ceramic techniques, including wheel throwing and slab building, while sharing his process for creating unique pieces that blend Eastern and Western techniques and philosophies.

Surl conducted the workshop in conjunction with his guest artist exhibition at Victoria College titled “Guardians, Vessels and Landscapes,” which will be on display in the VC Fine Arts Gallery through Sept. 27.

A Korean native, Surl earned his M.F.A. in ceramics from Ohio University. Before moving to the U.S., he completed a two-year apprenticeship in Korean traditional pottery and kiln design. He is passionate about blending Eastern and Western techniques and philosophies in his work, which is also deeply influenced by his background as an architectural interior designer - particularly in how space and form evoke responses from viewers.

Surl has conducted numerous workshops both nationally and internationally, and his work has been featured in the NCECA Journal and Ceramics Monthly.
