ASU Capital Campaign Exceeds Goal

As a historic fund-raising campaign draws to a close, Angelo State University has surpassed its $35 million goal in the first capital campaign in ASU’s 85-year history. 

ASU President Brian J. May announced the successful conclusion of the “Campaign for Angelo State University,” which had received $35,547,802 in donations by the end of June, two months ahead of the scheduled end of the fund-raising effort. The announcement marked a twin success for ASU, which had originally set a $25 million goal, but subsequently established a $35 million challenge goal after such a positive initial response by ASU alumni and supporters. By the end of June, the campaign had recorded gifts from 4,499 different donors.

“You will not find more generous and caring alumni and supporters anywhere,” May said, “than at Angelo State. We are grateful to all of those who gave money or invested their time in helping us meet our goal. Their generosity will touch ASU students for generations to come.”

The ASU campaign was part of a larger $1 billion campaign for all components of the Texas Tech University System (TTUS). That system goal was set in 2010 when the campaign’s public phase began. The system goal was achieved in February of this year.

TTUS Chancellor Kent Hance said, “Angelo State’s fundraising efforts went above and beyond during our ambitious capital campaign. Our supporters didn’t rest until meeting the challenge goal of $35 million, and we are truly grateful for the outstanding dedication of Angelo State alumni and friends.”

Angelo State kicked off its campaign publicly in September of 2010. By December of 2011, ASU had reached its initial $25 million goal through donations that ranged from a few dollars to seven-figure gifts. Campaign leadership at that time opted to increase by $10 million the targeted total for a challenge goal of $35 million. Once again, ASU’s friends – a combination of individuals, families, businesses and foundations – came through.

Jamie Akin, executive director of development and alumni relations, said, “This historic achievement for Angelo State University shows the loyalty of our alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the university.”

Austin’s Wayne T. Franke, chairman of the ASU Foundation, which played a critical role in the campaign’s success, said, “I am so proud of President May, the development staff, every member of the ASU Foundation Board, and the entire ASU family in having reached this tremendous milestone. We worked together as a team for the betterment of ASU, and we are all so proud to do our part in helping grow ASU and the great Texas Tech System.”

Akin said the campaign touched virtually every academic and athletic area on campus, addressing multiple ASU needs, ranging from scholarships to buildings and from endowed chairs to programmatic support. Additionally, the campaign enhanced contributions to the ASU Alumni Association, the Athletic Foundation and the annual fund.

Campaign donations established endowed chairs in the College of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Health and Human Services.

New facilities resulting from campaign gifts included the Mayer-Rousselot Agriculture Education Training Center, scheduled for completion in early 2014; the 1st Community Federal Credit Union Field, targeted for use this fall; and the Norris Baseball Clubhouse, which opened in the fall of 2011.

All gifts donated to ASU through Aug. 31, when the current fiscal year ends, will be counted toward the final total for the “Campaign for Angelo State University.”
