When I was asked during my interview for president what I wanted students to remember the most about ASU, I responded that I hoped they would say it was “like going home and being treated like family.” So to all you returning students, faculty and staff, I say welcome home again. It is because of you that ASU provides a unique college experience and an extremely diverse campus that anyone can call home.
It is also because of you that ASU continues to build a growing national reputation. It was announced in August that for the sixth straight year, Angelo State has been named to The Princeton Review’s list of “Best Colleges” nationally. That prestigious designation is one of the reasons that new students and employees chose ASU. In this issue of ASU Magazine, you will be introduced to a varied group of students, faculty and staff who illustrate a sampling of the many other reasons to also choose ASU. You will also meet some of our newest Carr Scholarship recipients and see examples of the excitement generated throughout the region by the Office of Admissions’ new “I Chose ASU” campaign.
Another exciting aspect of this fall semester is the prospect of playing our home football games on campus for the first time at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field. The atmosphere promises to be electrifying in the more intimate venue. At the same time, we must not forget that our student-athletes in the other fall sports also deserve our full support. Please join me in getting behind them by attending their games and cheering them to victory.
However, while the fall is a time of new beginnings, it is also a suitable time to reflect. Due to the tremendous support of ASU alumni and friends, the university has several new athletic playing fields and a new agriculture education center, and we are eagerly anticipating a new engineering program and facility. We can all be inspired by the generosity of these donors who have chosen to give to ASU. We can also be inspired by the exploits of former students like Ben Kelly, whose name now adorns the Center for Human Performance, as well as by those being honored at Homecoming this year by the Alumni Association.
As we embark on a new academic year, our job now as faculty and staff is to harness the new excitement, build on our past successes and continue to offer the finest education and college experience to our diverse student body. From Miles to Germany, from Ozona to Korea, from Ballinger to New York and everywhere in between, our students are counting on us to fulfill the promise they saw when they chose ASU. I look forward to working with all of you toward that auspicious and reachable goal.
