Italy is a world leader in developing effective instruction for preschool and primary students through the Reggio Emilia approach. This approach includes an emphasis on respect, responsibility and community. Instruction is based on the interests of children and a self-guided curriculum. The neighboring country of Greece provides contrast of teaching and learning in a country plagued with economic problems.
During your time in these countries, you will:
Interact with students, teachers and administrators.
Study classroom settings in Greece and Italy in contrast to the United States educational system.
Learn how student needs are met in foreign classrooms with various teaching strategies.
Attend seminars facilitated by ASU faculty.
Study the teaching practices, student services and curriculum aspects provided in
Greek and Italian schools.
Visit places of historical, literary and cultural significance.
ED 4381 Special Topics in Education (Study Abroad: Education and Teaching in Italy/Greece)
Examine education in Greece and Italy as compared to the United States. Participate in a variety of planned experiences in schools to gain a deeper understanding of the teaching and learning process in Greece and Italy.
ED 4381 Special Topics in Education (Study Abroad: Linguistically Diverse Learners) Examine the culture’s effect on teaching and learning within schools in Greece and Italy.
Participate in a variety of planned experiences in schools and key cultural exhibits to gain a deeper understanding of the history and culture of Greece and Italy.
All travel arrangements will be made by the faculty directors and approved by the university. Students will be extensively briefed prior to departure regarding travel arrangements and schedules with addresses and telephone numbers given to each participant.
All program participants must have adequate health and accident insurance coverage in case of medical issues or emergencies. Students will be required to obtain health insurance that will provide medical and related benefits. The CIS will ensure that all students have completed their study abroad paperwork prior to departure.
To be eligible for this program, undergraduate students must meet these requirements:
Completed at least 24 credit hours of coursework in residence or by transfer at the time of application. Dual credit hours do not count toward this total.
A cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 at the time of application
The program will be under the direction of Dr. Donna Gee, Professor of Teacher Education, and Dr. Sonja Varbelow, Associate Professor of Teacher Education.
Dr. Gee co-directed six study abroad programs: the 2010 New Zealand and Australia, the 2012 and 2015 Fiji and New Zealand, the 2014 and 2016 Greece and Italy and the 2018 Australia International Studies Programs.
Dr. Varbelow grew up in Germany, has extensive international travel experience, and co-directed the 2018 Australia study abroad program.
