Dear Mr. Johnson,
I have the honor to inform you that by direction of the President the Silver Star has been awarded to you by the Commanding General, 1st US Infantry Division. The Citation is as follows:
“For gallantry in action in the vicinity of Stolberg, Germany, 20 September 1944. When a platoon was impeded by heavy machine gun fire from an enemy emplacement, Private Johnson fearlessly moved across perilous terrain to an exposed vantage point and directed a grenade into the position. He then courageously attacked the strongpoint and, after a bitter hand-to-hand engagement, compelled the surrender of the hostile force. Private Johnson’s gallant actions exemplify the outstanding initiative of the American soldier.”
(Authority: GO 109, Hq 1st US Inf Div, 19 Jun 45, Pfc, 18th Inf)
The Commanding General, Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has been authorized this date to forward an appropriately engraved Silver Star to you.
Sincerely yours,
Edward F. Witsell
Major General
The Adjutant General
