Percussion and Jazz
Trent Shuey is an educator, arranger, and award-winning percussionist. He has walked to the beat of “A different drummer... [he is] the man for all styles” – The Hermiston Herald (2000). Trent maintains an active career as a percussion soloist, orchestral percussionist and jazz drummer. He has been a timpani concerto soloist with the Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra and the University of Nevada Percussion Ensemble, marimba soloist with the Angelo State University Wind Ensemble, is recipient of the Edgard Varese Percussion Award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has toured internationally with the OperaMaya opera company, and has performed numerous solo recitals throughout the United States.
Trent recently completed his sixth year as Assistant Director of Bands and Instructor of Percussion at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. He is the Director of the Angelo State University Jazz Ensemble, Ram Horns, Percussion Ensemble, and Ram Band Drumline. He has been guest conductor and marimba soloist with the Angelo State University Wind Ensemble, guest soloist with the Angelo State University Symphony Orchestra, and performed numerous solo and chamber recitals in the San Angelo area. Prior to his appointment at ASU, Trent has served as Adjunct Faculty and Director of Percussion Studies at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Oregon, in addition to Graduate Teaching Assistant for the percussion and athletic band programs at the University of Nevada, Reno and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and he has taught several high school percussion programs throughout the United States. He is the founder of the Angelo State University Day of Percussion. His percussion students have a one-hundred percent placement rate in their chosen field. As an active percussion arranger, he has arranged percussion music for over forty collegiate half-time shows for athletic band programs across the United States.
As a versatile percussionist, Trent has performed with several professional orchestras, big bands, combos, and chamber ensembles. Trent has held principal percussion and timpani positions with the Tahoe Symphony, Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra, and Inland Northwest Symphony. Trent has performed with many other professional ensembles including the San Angelo Symphony Orchestra, Oregon East Symphony, Reno Philharmonic, Reno Chamber Orchestra, Reno Jazz Orchestra, Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra, and Sinfonia da Camera. Trent holds a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance with a minor in Music Education from Eastern Oregon University, a Master of Music in Percussion Performance with a minor in Jazz Performance from the University of Nevada, Reno where he was Graduate Teaching Assistant for the percussion department and athletic bands and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha and Tau Beta Sigma.
