Experience

My research group focuses on solving biochemical problems, including incorporation of nonstandard amino acids into proteins and using phage display to explore interactions between proteins. One project aims to identify affibody proteins that will bind to proteins found in a variety of snake venoms, which might lead to additional tools for studying venom proteins. Affibodies are a type of small protein that can be designed to bind with high affinity to a researcher’s protein of choice. In our research, a library of affibody molecules displayed on M13 bacteriophage is being used to probe affibody/snake venom interactions. Bacteriophage, viruses that infect bacteria, are composed of a single-stranded circular DNA genome which is surrounded by a protein coat which protects it and interacts with bacteria during infection. The amino terminus of the minor coat protein pIII extends into solution so that proteins or peptides can be fused to it without an interruption of the infection function of pIII. The displaying of proteins or peptides on phage surfaces (phage display) has been used in several different applications, including drug development and materials science. Our lab teaches students modern biochemical techniques, which helps prepare them for graduate research and industry positions.
