TSgt Jose Thornton

NCOIC, Personnel Aerospace Studies

Staff Sergeant Austin R. Thornton is the Personnel NCO for Detachment 847, Angelo State University, San Angelo, TX. He is responsible for all of the administrative processes for the assigned Air Force officer candidates. He works closely with the Commander and Operations Officer keeping the cadet corps on track and within AFROTC standards. He is also responsible for the direction and supervision of all in processing, contracting, and commissioning efforts of all cadets.

SSgt Thornton enlisted in the Air Force on 27 Dec 2011. He spent his first five years as a Personnelist at Minot Air Force Base (AFB), North Dakota, with one deployment to Al Udeid AB, Qatar. During these assignments, SSgt Thornton conquered various challenges. As an A1C he was entrusted as the base Unfavorable Information Files (UIF) monitor where he was in charge of maintaining sensitive disciplinary documents. Additionally, while serving in the base Honor Guard he left a lasting impression, through his military bearing and discipline, during 53 official ceremonies. His efforts culminated in winning the Honor member of the 4th quarter in 2013. While deployed to Al Udeid, Qatar, he handled Personnel Support for Contingency Operations, coordinating waiver requests between 140 installations and 39 deployed units. Additionally, his actions were intrigue to accounting for and the in/out-processing of 45,000 Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine personnel. Upon returning to Minot AFB, SSgt Thornton completed Airman Leadership School where he earned the John L. Levitow award and NCO of the second quarter of 2017 for the 5th Force Support Squadron.
