Letter to Nita from Doyle Yardley (1)

Dearest Nita & Co.—

Well, my sweet little pet, here I come with a letter. Listen to me, Honey, I really have no excuse—except that I have not been in the mood to write. I know you will forgive me on that basis.

Say, here, I think you really have the boy friends. That Texas Aggie fellow from Uvalde sounds grand to me. I’ve got only one thing to say, kiddo, think a long time before you marry. First, the two of you (i.e. when you marry) should talk over every angle. Second, the both of you must be sure that you are in love. Infatuation and passion are not love—and you know it. I have expressed all danger of them. One must not passion fool one that it is love, because it ain’t, see? Of course there would be no matings if there were not passion. That is the thing that causes mating, which causes procreation—if you know what I mean. Yes, I, and Peg are here not by choice but by accident. I’m darn glad there were three accidents ha.

Well, I be darned, how do I always get off on a tangent? Whats new, Toots?

Have I got a gal friend now—that I’m a married man? Jesus, yes! Too many! Oh dear me, dear me, I love my women—but I’m going to watch my steps from now on. By golly, it looks like I will be an old man—too old—before I even get a family. But the bible says you gotta be legitimate about it ha!

Say, how is the Turnbo [?] family? Give old Charlie, Peg & Siland [?] all my love.

I shall be back in the states perhaps for good. You know I’m the dog-gonedist guy. I’m not satisfied anywhere, anymore.

Well, so much, of such, is sufficient for the [illegible], so I compromise by saying, Bye now.
