Experience

Energetic Stability of Fullerene Derivatives

My research group is currently investigating the energetic stability of TM@C_2x and TM-C_2x (X = 0 or 4, and TM = Group 11 & 12 metal ions) molecular species. Due to a high degree of cage strain, the smallest fullerene (C₂₀) is very unstable, has a very short life-time, and is incredibly difficulty to synthesize. Previous research has shown that attaching electronegative atoms/moieties on the outside of the cage (exohedral derivative) or added to the inside of the cage (endohedral derivative) the stability of the complex increases significantly. Additionally, a more exotic study into the role that metals and their ionic forms have on the stability of these small fullerenes is also underway. In this area of research, my group is assessing the stability of C19X metallo-heterofullerenes, where X = transition metals.
