Assessment Criteria

Assessment focuses on instructional activities designed to measure progress toward learning outcomes, provide feedback to students and instructor, and enable grade assignment. This section address the quality and type of student assessments within the course.

The criteria are as followed, and your course is graded for each as Exemplary, Accomplished, Promising, or Incomplete:

Expectations

• Write your instructions clearly and with sufficient detail to ensure understanding
• Direct your students to the objectives for each assignment
• Attach rubrics to your assignments

Assessment Design

• Have students use analysis and problem-solving in their assignments
• Have assessments regularly throughout the course
• Use different types of tests (research projects, objective test, discussion boards, etc).

Self Assessment

• Provide opportunities for self-assessments that provide constructive, meaningful feedback

Dr. Kimberley Livengood has excellent examples of what to do in your course to reflect the Assessment aspect of the ECP rubric:

Expectations

• Objectives are outlined in a chart in the syllabus
• Provide an outline for paper assignments and bold objectives
• Rubrics are used to show students what they accomplished in regards to objectives in the course

Assessment Design

• Multimedia assignment- students use something other than a PowerPoint to present content and images to meet assessment requirements
• Discussion boards respond to different types of resources provided as well as to peers’ posts to demonstrate understanding of the rubric
• Media paper- analyze different types of media or programs according to cultural aspects, which meets the need for students to use higher order thinking skills

Self Assessment

• Use a rubric so students are able to evaluate their work based on the rubric that instructors will ultimately use to provide feedback
• Reflective parts of assignments offer opportunity for the students to self assess their work
• Journal tool provides opportunity for ongoing conversation between the student and instructor about their mastery of the concepts
