President’s Circle Impact
The unrestricted funds are a powerful form of private support because they allow the university to allocate funding where current and often time-sensitive needs are greatest. Here are just a few examples.
Biology Freezer
The addition of a new ultra-cold freezer in the Angelo State Natural History Collections was pivotal to its growth and stability. When the ASNHC collects specimens or accepts donations, we are committed to preserve those resources for as long as possible in order that they may be available to future researchers.
With about 100,000 preserved specimens of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and plants from the Concho Valley and throughout the world, the ASNHC aid student and faculty research projects, are used as classroom teaching tools, and have been viewed by thousands of K-12 students through special guided tours. The collections are also widely used in national and international research pursuits.
Scholarship Signing Days
Similar to athletes signing their college letters of intent, Scholarship Signing Days are conducted on the ASU campus and at local high schools to celebrate ASU Distinguished Scholarship recipients who have just committed to becoming part of the Ram Family.
Scholarship Signing Days are also held in conjunction with the annual “I Chose Angelo State” celebration to encourage local and area high school students to take a closer look at what ASU has to offer. The campaign officially kicks off every year in April.
About a third of all ASU students receive ASU Distinguished Scholarships, which are funded by one of the largest endowments in the nation at a regional university.
Flight Simulator
Cadets in ASU’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 interested in becoming pilots are able to take advantage of the state-of-the-art HotSeat Pilot Pro 4 flight simulator.
The $16,000 simulator provides an “in-the-cockpit” experience designed to immerse students in topographically and geographically correct display graphics, surround sound, cockpit displays with navigation instruments and communications radios, more than 150 aircraft simulations and various other gadgets.
The simulator helps prepare ASU cadets for the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) and acquire a certain number of flight hours. Previously, cadets had to pay for their own flying lessons at San Angelo’s Mathis Field at a cost of $180 per hour. Cadets can now accumulate flight training hours on the simulator at no cost and without the safety risks of actual flying. The simulator’s tutored missions also train cadets in a wide variety of situations and scenarios, including some that are not normally components of regular flying lessons.
