ASU Livestock Show Team Excels in Fort Worth

Release Date: January 26, 2007

Angelo State University ’s Livestock Show Team brought home four first-class wins and placed in nine of 10 categories with their Rambouillet sheep at the 2007 Fort Worth Livestock Show and Rodeo last weekend.

The six-member team entered 12 Rambouillet sheep in the Open Breed Sheep Show, competing against about a dozen entries in each category. Team members placed first in the Pair of Ram Lambs, Two Tooth Rams, Two Tooth Ewes and Exhibitors Flock categories. To that they added second placings in Ram Lambs, Two Tooth Rams, and Four to Six Tooth Ewes. They also recorded two third places, three fourth place finishes and one fifth.

Lambs are less than a year old, two tooth sheep are a year old, and four to six tooth sheep are two or three years old.

Show team members include graduate assistant Chase Settle, senior Aaron Gillespie and freshmen Lura Hayes, Lauren Kaker, Melissa Yamma and Gaylon Wilmeth. They work with a flock of 20 sheep, of which 12 can be taken to each competition. The rams weigh as much as 350 pounds, with the ewes tipping the scales at up to 275 pounds.

“I am very happy with the work that the show team has done and are continuing to do,” Settle said. “They work extremely hard and never complain about any job that needs to be done. They are also fearless in that they don’t get intimidated by the size of the sheep and are constantly getting banged around, but they keep working just as hard.”

Next up for the show team is the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Feb. 7 and the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo Feb. 21.
