Patriotic Theme, Multiple Activities Highlight 2002 ASU Homecoming

Built around the theme "United We Stand: ASUSA," Homecoming 2002 at Angelo State University will offer a variety of activities culminating Saturday night when the Rams play Eastern New Mexico and the homecoming king and queen are announced at halftime in San Angelo Stadium.

A week of campus activities will be at their peak Friday and Saturday with the Wells Fargo Homecoming Dinner Friday evening, a Rambelle soccer match at noon Saturday, the Homecoming Parade at 2 p.m. Saturday and then the homecoming game at 7 p.m..

The Angelo State University Alumni Association will honor six individuals during the Wells Fargo Homecoming Dinner Friday, Oct. 11, starting with registration at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. in the C.J. "Red" Davidson Conference Center in the Houston Harte University Center (UC) on the ASU campus. Tickets cost $17.50 each. Reservations should be made by Wednesday, Oct. 9, by contacting the ASU Alumni Association at 942-2122.

The alumni association honorees are Dr. Bill W. "Billy" Mullins, Class of 1978, as Distinguished Alumnus; Dr. Yolanda B. Truckenbrodt, Class of 1980, as Distinguished ROTC Alumnus; Dr. Devesh Raj, Class of 1995, as Distinguished Carr Scholar Alumnus; Carlton L. Smith, Sr., Class of 1947, as Golden Ex of the Year; Elmer Kelton as Honorary Alumnus; and Dr. H. Dempsey Watkins, as Outstanding Retired Faculty.

The dinner will be preceded by the President's Golden Exes Reception at 6 p.m. in the West Texas Collection on the UC second floor.

Friday's activities will begin with a 2 p.m. meeting of the Retired Faculty Organization in the Tucker Room in the UC and will conclude with a variety of spirit activities, including the Beating of the Drum at 8 p.m. and the Homecoming Pep Rally at 8:30 p.m. at the Multipurpose Sports Complex. The Pep Rally will be followed at 9:15 p.m. by the Torch Parade to the site of the bonfire at Knickerbocker Road and University Avenue. The bonfire will be lit at 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Saturday's activities will begin at 7:30 a.m. with registration for the alumni association's West Central Wireless/West Central Net Homecoming Golf Tournament at San Angelo Country Club. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $85 per person and information is available from the alumni association at 325-942-2122.

At noon the Rambelle soccer team will take on Midwestern State University at the ASU Soccer Fields. The Homecoming Parade is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday along Vanderventer Avenue and Johnson Street on the ASU campus. The annual Track and Field Reunion is scheduled 3-5 p.m. Saturday at 5373 Fairway Drive in Bentwood Country Club Estates. The Ram Rugby Club is scheduled to play Eastern New Mexico University at 4 p.m. at the Recreational Sports Complex.

The football game will begin at 7 p.m. in San Angelo Stadium with the halftime presentation of the Homecoming Court and the announcement of the Queen and King. Saturday's activities will conclude with the annual alumni mixer hosted by the alumni association at Mejor Que Nada.

Homecoming week will be kicked off with a variety of activities starting Sunday, Oct. 6 with a 2 p.m. Rambelle soccer game against Incarnate Word at the ASU Soccer Fields. At 4 p.m. Sunday, the American Chemical Society will host the Homecoming Invitational Games at the ASU Pavilion for ASU students. Delta Sigma Pi will sponsor the Brisket Cook Off at 5 p.m. at the pavilion. At 7 p.m. Delta Zeta will hold the rehearsal for Homecoming Court nominees in the UC.

Activities Monday, Oct. 7, will include the first round of the ASU Weakest Link Contest at 3 p.m. in the UC Nasworthy Suites. The presentation of Homecoming Court nominees is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. in the UC Davidson Conference Center.

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, activities begin with the rehearsal for the ASU Homecoming Talent Show sponsored by Tau Kappa Epsilon in the UC Davidson Conference Center. A Rambelle softball doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at the ASU Softball Field. A Scavenger Hunt organized by Block and Bridle is set for 5 p.m. at the pavilion. The Angelo State Cross Country Classic is scheduled at San Angelo Regional Airport with women beginning at 5:15 p.m. and men at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. At 7 p.m. the ASU Weakest Link Contest finals will be sponsored by the Association of Mexican American Students in the UC Davidson Conference Center. The Mr. and Ms. ASU contest sponsored by Sigma Kappa and the Student Alumni Association will begin at 7:30 p.m., also in the UC Davidson Conference Center.

On Wednesday, Oct. 9, the International Students Association will host the Distinguished Homecoming Scholar Contest at 2 p.m. in the UC. That will be followed at 7 p.m. by the ASU Homecoming Talent Show in the UC Davidson Conference Center.

Thursday, Oct. 10, activities will begin with a 4 p.m. washer tournament sponsored by Sigma Phi Epsilon at the Pavilion. The Student Organizational Carnival organized by Epsilon Sigma Alpha will run 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the pavilion.

At 7 p.m. Thursday "Vocal Lite," a special Homecoming Concert featuring the ASU Chamber Singers and Vocal Ensemble, will offer an eclectic program of popular selections from romantic opera, big-band jazz, Broadway musical theater and soft rock. The concert is open free to the public in the University Auditorium.
