Questions?

  • What’s new for 2018

The reporting method has changed due to new federal requirements for the 2018 Form 1098-T to use Box 1 Payments Received for Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses.

Box 1 reports combined payments from all sources, but it will not exceed the qualified tuition and fees billed during 2018. Box 1 may include payments that are also reported in Box 5 Scholarships and Grants. Therefore, the amounts on Form 1098-T Box 1 might be different from personal payments you made to ASU.

Details that you may want for tax preparation are available through the online 1098-T Tax Notification. Current and former students can find it on the Financial Aid & Billing page in RamPort.

You can also find helpful answers to common tax questions using the FAQ link on the right side of this page.

  • Where can I see the detail of the box amounts?

Details that you may want for tax preparation are available through the online 1098-T Tax Notification.  Current and former students can find it on the Financial Aid & Billing page in RamPort.

  • What is a Form 1098-T?

IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement is an informational return. All eligible educational institutions must file an IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement for each qualifying student for whom a reportable transaction is made during the calendar year. Forms are not required for students with these reporting exceptions: non-resident alien or non-credit courses.

Please note that the Form 1098-T may not provide all of the information needed to determine eligibility for tax credits and deductions. Eligibility for any tax benefit depends upon your individual facts and circumstances. The University cannot provide tax advice.

  • Why am I receiving this form?

All eligible educational institutions must file an IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement for each qualifying student for whom a reportable transaction is made during the calendar year.  All ASU students will receive a form in the mail or online by January 31st.  This includes high school students receiving ASU credit through Dual Credit Programs.

  • How do I use this form?

You, or the person who can claim you as a dependent, may be able to claim an education credit on your tax return.  This form is used to help figure the education credit.  However, the form may not provide all of the information needed to plug into your return or to determine eligibility of any credit.

  • Where can I find help with the education credits?

Please be advised that Angelo State University cannot give legal, tax, or accounting advice, cannot determine if students qualify for a tax credit or deduction, and cannot determine the tax treatment of other higher education transactions on your personal tax return. To see if you qualify for a credit, and for help in calculating the amount of your credit, see IRS Publication 970 Tax Benefits for Education, Form 8863, and the Form 1040 instructions. The Interactive Tax Assistant tool on IRS.gov can help determine eligibility for certain educational credits.

  • Will I receive a Form 1098-T every year?

Possibly. The information for your form depends on the transaction dates of billing and aid disbursement. This can result in your amounts changing for tax year to tax year, even though your total hours/aid each term did not change.

You should go through RamPort and look for a Tax Notification for the tax year you want. If you do not have a form for that tax year, you will see the message “No tax notification exists for tax year.”

  • Will I receive a Form 1098-T? How do I know?

IRS rules may not allow education tax benefits unless the student receives a Form 1098-T. All ASU students will receive a form (even if all boxes are blank) in the mail or online by January 31. This includes high school students receiving ASU credit through Dual Credit Programs.

  • What other information do I need?

The form 1098-T, as designed and regulated by the IRS, may not contain all of the information needed to claim an education tax benefit. Please consult a tax professional, the IRS at 800-829-1040, or the IRS Publication 970 Tax Benefits for Education.

    You may need additional information.

  • What are non-qualified tuition and related expenses?

Non-qualified tuition and related expenses are charges and fees for room, board, insurance, medical expenses (including student health fees), transportation, and similar personal, living, or family expenses.

  • What are qualified tuition and related expenses?

Qualified tuition and related expenses are tuition, fees, and course materials required for a student to be enrolled at or attend an eligible educational institution.

  • I received a Form 1098-T in the mail. Where is the detail for the form?

It’s on your Tax Notification in RamPort. You can see the detail, but it is not sent to the IRS.

  • Why did I receive a Form 1098-T that is blank?

IRS rules may not allow education tax benefits unless the student receives a Form 1098-T. All ASU students will receive a form (even if all boxes are blank) in the mail or online by January 31. This includes high school students receiving ASU credit through Dual Credit Programs.

The information for your form depends on the transaction dates of billing and aid disbursement. While that may leave you with a blank form for the year, your tax benefits may be limited or you may be subject to an IRS audit if the university did not issue the form.

Please consult a tax professional, the IRS at 800-829-1040, or the IRS Publication 970 Tax Benefits for Education.

  • I am no longer a student. Will I receive a Form 1098-T? How do I know?

Possibly. Transactions are included only if they are dated in the tax year. The start date for the term does not determine the tax year.

You should go through RamPort and look for a Tax Notification for the tax year you want. If you do not have a form for that tax year, you will see the message “No tax notification exists for tax year.”

Former students still have access to RamPort. The Technology Service Center (1-866-942-2911) can help reset an expired password.

  • I am a parent. How can I tell if my student will receive a Form 1098-T?

The tax information is available to your student.

However, students can give a parent, as a Proxy, online viewing access to their student records. All they have to do is create a FERPA/Proxy Authorized User form their secure RamPort account and grant online viewing access by choosing the “Authorization” tab to select the Tax Notification to view. When that is complete, you may log in as a Proxy and view the Tax Notification for the tax year.

Watch the Online FERPA/Proxy videos or scroll to the bottom of the page for more instructions.

Without FERPA/Proxy Access, parents must ask their student to provide them with the Tax Notification from RamPort. The University will not provide the Tax Notification from RamPort to parents.

The IRS Form 1098-T that is mailed to students is also available online at www.tsc1098t.com.

  • Are the books purchased at the university bookstore included in this form?

No. This form does not include purchases at the university bookstore that are not included on student bill.

  • Who will mail the Form 1098-T?

Angelo State University contracts with Tab Service Company to provide qualifying students a Form 1098-T Tuition Statement for the tax year. The form is mailed by January 31 after the tax year to each qualifying student at their permanent address on record with the Office of the Registrar.
