Work Study is an employment program funded by either federal or state government and by either the university or an off-campus nonprofit-employer. Students must indicate that they are interested in the program, on their FAFSA application and demonstrate “need”. Financial need is defined as the difference between the cost of attendance, other aid, and the expected family contribution (EFC). If the EFC and other aid combined is not enough to cover the cost of attendance, then the student is considered to have financial need.
As with any on or off-campus job, students must apply, and they are not guaranteed a job if they are awarded work study. Work Study funds are paid directly to the student as the hours are earned. Payment for the hours worked is deposited on the student’s ASU OneCard, it is not credited to the student’s bill. Students generally work 15-20 hours per week. The rate of pay is determined by the fiscal regulations of the university, but will not be less than minimum wage. Since there are limited work study positions on and off campus, please also look at other job opportunities through Career Development Office Student Job Posting.
Work Study is real, on-the-job training and is a wonderful opportunity for students. It offers students the opportunity to develop employment skills, network in your field and build upon a resume for employment once graduation occurs.
Work Study eligibility may change per year. Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress and renew each year their FAFSA. Work Study awarded amounts could be adjusted at any time according to federal and institutional regulations.
